Are Your Bulls Actually Siring Calves? Webinar November 16

For producers that breed cows in large pastures with multiple bulls, it’s often assumed that all of the bulls will sire roughly the same number of calves. Research shows a surprising variation in the number of calves sired by each bull. Learn more by joining this webinar on how DNA parentage testing may help determine sire value on your operation.

Near Olds, AB? Attend the webinar in person!
The Technology Access Centre for Livestock Production (TAC) in Olds, Alberta will be hosting a viewing of this webinar for producers that don’t have access to reliable technology or who prefer to view the webinar in a social setting. This event is free of charge and will be hosted in the Bell 953 room located in the Bell-E Learning Centre at Olds College. Speakers:

Virgil Lowe – Business Manager for Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+)

Virgil will be speaking on the Canadian Beef Sustainability Acceleration Pilot.

As Business Manager for Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) Virgil works closely with the rest of the national VBP+ staff and provincial coordinators to deliver the VBP+ program across Canada. Virgil is primarily responsible for national initiatives related to partnerships, business activities, and outward facing VBP+ projects. VBP+ delivers training and verification services in an effort to demonstrate responsible practices at the farm and feedlot level on Canadian beef operations. Virgil is a lawyer and combines that with his background growing up on a ranch and feedlot to help manage VBP+’s business operations.

Stacey Domolewski  – Science and Extension Coordinator, Beef Cattle Research Council

Stacey Domolewski assists with the review of scientific reports and gathering of relevant research-based information for various audiences. She helps coordinate the development, maintenance and utilization of various extension resources, including the BCRC’s webinars, fact sheets and other content on www.BeefResearch.ca. Stacey also coordinates the BCRC’s Beef Researcher Mentorship Program.

Stacey recently completed a Master’s of Science degree at the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture and Bioresources. Stacey’s graduate work focused on DNA parentage in commercial cattle and using it to determine which bulls were siring calves. She is a graduate of the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders program. Her family ranches in Southern Alberta.

What is a webinar?
Webinars are just like attending a workshop or conference, but from the comfort of your own home or office. We bring the presentation right to you. They’re easy to join and participate in. A reliable, high-speed internet connection is required.

All you need to do is register beforehand, and about 5-10 minutes before the webinar is scheduled to begin, click the link you were provided when you registered. Then turn up your computer speakers or call the phone number provided. That’s it! Sit back and enjoy. As a participant, you can anonymously answer polls and surveys, and will have the opportunity to ask questions near the end of the webinar.

Consider calling a neighbor that does and watch the webinar together, or call your regional ag office to ask whether arranging a group viewing is possible.
